Can Tree roots growing above the surface create safety challenges?

Tree Stumps and roots above the surface can create fall hazards in a yard.

Can Tree roots growing above the surface create safety challenges?  Yes, tree roots growing above the surface can create safety challenges without a doubt.  The hazards are genuinely numerous, and easy to overlook, because it's typically not right at eye level.

Arbors often present trip hazards when their roots rise above the surface. Serving the greater Harris County area since 2001, I've had the opportunity to see many different arbor situations. On one occasion several years back, a customer was attempting to illustrate a limb he was concerned might fall, and hurt someone in his family. He took a step back, and tripped on a cluster of roots from a Maple tree which had grown above the surface. Fortunately, although a bit embarrassed, I'm happy to report he was ok. At this point he said something to the extent of, "Delfino, I know I called you about this hanging limb, however didn't think about these roots. If it caused me to fall, I believe this is a sign from above that this could cause an injury to one of my kids or their friends when they're playing on the yard. Could you level out this surface, so I won't have to worry about a future tangled root related fall?" We were able to achieve this without the need to sacrifice the tree. We also removed the hanging limb, and our client was thrilled and relieved.

This was a good teachable lesson for both of us, and at times I've shared this with other Houston residents, however more often than not, home owners will present this to me on their own and ask for my professional advice. Like people, every tree is a bit different. Pine, Elm, Crepe Myrtle, Ash, Pecan, Hackberry, Red Oak, Mulberry, Live Oak, Water Oak, Sycamore, Tallow are just a few of our local arbor varieties. Some present more maintenance needs than others. Some have roots which grown deeply under the surface, while others have exposed roots atop the land. A solution may be to create a small retaining wall around the tree, and add mulch.  If this is not the preferred method, grinding these roots is generally best if we're going to remove the tree, however there are other possibilities to consider. Sometimes we clip or cut out the potentially dangerous surface roots. On some occasions, depending on the size of the area, and height of the root surface breach, we advise considering topping the area with soil each season. This requires diligent follow up, because each rain will cause run-off. Many customers aren't able or interested in doing this, and elect to have the tree and its roots removed. When we can, we try to save trees, however ultimately it's the customer's decision.

We fully understand tree roots creating a tripping hazard in your yard is easy to overlook. Sometimes all of us can become so focused upon portions of a tree above the ground, it's easy to lose perspective on potential injury sources. Many trees have roots which grow above the surface. We have professional equipment which grinds out all roots, and residual wood pieces deep. This allows for more flexibility, and possibly the planting of a different new tree.
